       Understanding Alzheimer’s

Use Your Brain to Fight Alzheimer’s was born from a deeply personal mission

  • To urge seniors to get annual Alzheimer’s screenings - before symptoms become irreversible

  • To explain how Alzheimer’s develops, and why understanding the “why” matters

  • To explore every current strategy that can slow its progression

  • To uncover the brain’s own inner processes and explore how these processes support life-extending tactics

This book isn’t a memoir, though it includes real stories. It’s not a textbook, but it’s packed with vital information. It’s a clear guide that readers can return to again and again.

Whether you’re navigating an early-stage diagnosis, supporting aging parents, or giving care to someone you love, this book offers insight, clarity, and practical tools. Each chapter focuses on a key aspect of brain health, allowing you to find exactly what you need, when you need it.

Knowledge is power - in this case, it just might change the future.

Test Before Symptoms Appear

If you’re over 65, don’t wait for memory loss or confusion to become obvious.

The newest Alzheimer’s medications, like Leqembi, are only approved for people in the earliest stages - often before symptoms are noticeable.

That’s the danger. Stages 1 and 2 of Alzheimer’s are hard to spot without testing.

You need a real test - given by your doctor. The most widely accepted cognitive assessments include:

  • Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE)

  • Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)

  • Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR)

These are simple, fast and low-cost tools used by insurers like Aetna to confirm eligibility for treatment. But here’s the problem: most doctors won’t give one of the tests unless you ask.

That’s why we urge everyone 65 and older to request one of these assessments as part of your annual checkup.

Concerned About a Loved One?

Alzheimer’s can begin so gradually that it's easy to overlook the early signs—most people just explain them away. But recognizing the changes early gives your loved one the best chance to take advantage of treatments that can slow progression.

And the signs aren’t just about memory. They may show up as:

• Poor judgment

• Trouble making decisions

• Confusion about time or place

• Difficulty with words or conversations

• Changes in behavior or personality

• Physical coordination issues

If you have aging parents or loved ones, you may notice things they can’t. Your awareness could make all the difference.

What You Can Do:

1. Know What to Look For

2. Respond Thoughtfully to Changes

3. Encourage a Cognitive Assessment

Early detection opens the door to support, planning, and—most importantly—hope.

Be the person who makes that possible.
